The restoration of the model of the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant, preserved at the Museum of Energy and Technology in Vilnius, has received funding from the Lithuanian Council for Culture. The application included letters of support from the NuSPACES team and Miles Oglethorpe, president of The International Committee for the Conservation of Industrial Heritage (TICCIH).

In October Linara Dovydaitytė worked at the Lithuanian Central State Archives collecting material for the forthcoming article on exhibiting nuclear energy in Soviet and post-Soviet Lithuania.

Fieldwork at the Lithuanian Energy Institute

Linara Dovydaitytė visited the museum of the Lithuanian Energy Institute in Kaunas. The compact but material-rich exhibition preserves organizational memory of the state research institution that was once involved in the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant site investigations and is now researching various factors related to decommissioning and radioactive waste management.

New publication places nuclear narratives within the context of post-war development

Coming soon! Linda Ross has co-edited New Lives New Landscapes Revisited: Rural Modernity in Britain, which is due to be published for the British Academy by Oxford University Press on June 8. Her chapter focuses on Dounreay’s nuclear narratives, with particular emphasis on heritage. Dounreay, in the far north of Scotland, was the site of the UK’s first full-scale fast breeder reactor.

Drawing workshop with children in Barsebäck

In the end of March, researchers from Linköping university and curators from Malmö Museums arranged a drawing workshop with children from a school located five kilometres from the Barsebäck NPP in southern Sweden. The children were encouraged to draw and write based on the question: “What do you think of when someone says Barsebäck nuclear power plant?”.

Visiting a landscape architectural archive “in the making”

Karin Edberg (Linköping university) and Yvonne Magnusson (Malmö Museums) recently had the opportunity to visit the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and see the newly rediscovered original drawings of the Barsebäck NPP and its surroundings produced by the landscape architect Per Friberg and colleagues in the 1970s. A complex and time-consuming effort to preserve the material for the future is currently taking place.

In March 2023 Linda Ross attended two online meetings relating to heritage in the UK’s nuclear industry. 15 March saw the 11th meeting of the Dounreay Heritage Advisory Panel, which was formed after the issuing of the Dounreay Heritage Strategy in 2010. On 29 March Linda Ross attended the 8th meeting of the NDA Heritage Advisory Panel – a cross-disciplinary body of industry representatives, heritage professionals and researchers – which is providing guidance on the NDA heritage initiative.

In early February, Karin Edberg and Anna Storm spent a fieldwork week in the region around the Barsebäck nuclear power plant. The primary task was to go through the separate archive of the so called Local Safety Commission, a body of local political representatives in direct dialogue with the nuclear power plant.
